Your National Insurance Number (NINO) is your unique reference number for the UK social security system. Once you receive a NINO you will have that same number for your entire life. NINOs help HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) make sure your tax and National Insurance (NI) contributions are recorded against your name. You usually get sent a National Insurance number (NINO) just before your 16th birthday.
